Glad you visited sunny Bondi! The renos at the bergs are not bad, the view is good as ever! The waves probably turned on a display for you too - last week was like a lake!
we just did the reverse trip but inland. Had to drop the kid off at UNE in Armidale for her first year and then head to Brisbane to pick up the mother in law to bring back with us (with a side trip to Maleny to visit the brother in law). Elgoog sent us from Armidale to Brisbane through this very hairy but amazingly beautiful road over the mountains called the Waterfall Way? There were waterfalls as promised, amazing vistas, tunnels of rainforest requiring lights to be turned on in the middle of the day, and farmland that looked like scenes out of jurassic park just without roaming bands of long necked dinosaurs. Half the trip of that section on a road that was 1.5 cars wide. White knuckled amazement. Have book marked it for a later visit where we can stay there and then explore at will rather than trying to do the Australian roadtrip experience of doing point A to B in as quick a time as possible. Maleny and surrounds were also quite beautiful. Not sure i would want to live on that side of the border but its okay to visit i guess . . . . ; )
Main highways between major cities are generally good, about as good as the best US highways. Less major ones can be problematic - eg a couple of years ago I drove direct-ish from Armidale to Grafton, and that was rough - massive potholes all the way, had to stick to low speed to avoid destroying the car's suspension and tyres (or tires if you prefer). If you want to just drive between any of Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, you'll be fine - I can't personally tell you about road conditions in other states on recent experience. Freeways actually in the big cities are also on a par with the US, except that most of them are toll roads, and quite expensive ones. If you want to avoid tolls you have to use the older roads that vary enormously in quality and traffic volume.
In general they are okay? But I've only ever used English ones outside Aus as a comparison. All the main capital cities have problems though, QLD is notorious. Once off the the main motorways it all depends . . . . . highways can be filled with trucks, grey nomads, speedsters in a hurry to meet their maker and take someone with them, overtaking lanes can be a bit hit and miss, the list goes on.
That is a magnificent bathing option. I hope you had a fabulous time on your trip!
I don’t know about that light bulb arrangement. Did they run short of money?
As long as the Esky is within reach of that bath I'd not be getting out. Nothing rustic about that, downright civilised if you ask me.
With a noted family member being absent I assume someone is going to find their shoes chewed up and buried when they get back to Brisbane?

How are the highways in Australia?
We do a lot of driving in the US and there are generally few problems.
