Pretty sure when Socrates said " Know thyself ' he didn't imagine using ChatGPT. But then maybe he did, I don't know much about Socrates he's an ancient Greek I’m sure by my understanding and current day situtations they were into all sorts of weird shit.

Know thyself was the maxim (well obvious not it, no one could have read it, it was written in Greek, and not today’s Greek but….anyway) inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in the ancient Greek precinct of Delphi.

I think that’s how I will view the prognostications of these spicy clippy algorithms, like those of the Oracle of Delphi the vague obscure mutterings of someone breathing in toxic gases from an underground cave who people of power invested far too much belief.

I wonder where this is all going to go.

Question: Is my wife having an affair?

ChatGPT: Your wife hasn’t been happy for a long time.

I wonder what it might make of me. I don't talk to it or ask it anything. I do have an online presence through work. It might also consider me to have saved Earth a few hundred years ago.

on the other side, i used the phrase "steady on Fangio" and then second guessed myself about it. The crowd was half young and never heard it before. So i looked it up and got this bollocks: "Steady on Fangio" is likely referring to Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles. He's praised for his experience and ability to lead the team's defense, particularly after a period of struggles in 2023....

but just tried gpt4 and it gave me the correct result: The phrase "Steady on, Fangio!" (or just "Steady, Fangio") is a British expression used to tell someone to slow down, particularly when they're driving too fast or acting overly enthusiastically. It comes from the name of Juan Manuel Fangio, the legendary Argentine Formula One racing driver from the 1950s.

I guess that's where 'fang it' also comes from.

I love tech, but this leaves me feeling a bit uneasy.

Part of me hopes this is the unsteady first step towards machines that include provisions for privacy and nuance. And it might be, if the government chooses to step in a regulate an industry almost no one understands.

I'm reminded of the old tricks fortune tellers employ, using your 'tells' to flatter, and seem like they know you. There's not a single criticism or even a little negative feedback in that lot. I'd feel unworthy to be sullying your flawless, perfect presence, if I hadn't read enough of your online reflections to think that you're probably just trying to get by, like everyone else - gold hovercraft fleet notwithstanding. This is like the uncanny valley of robot flattery, desperately seeking to be liked - all the better to be considered credible - but the plagiarism machine just isn't that bright (yet).

Yeah and the interesting thing about that is Gruber's original instruction to 'play it straight'. The bot obviously had its own 'ideas' about what that meant.

Are you scared yet? You should be. It knows where you live, when you are most likely there (and elsewhere), probably knows your credit card and back account details and can probably guess your main passwords.
