I agree with you JB, thinking that something like this means that China doesn't have the military capabilities to kick ass would be like thinking the U.S doesn't have the sort of weapons to support multiple wars in other countries just because it's military spends 100$ on items like hammers and toilet seats. At least you can be sure that no defence contractors would be corrupt when taking the Petagon's money and not delivering what they were contracted to supply.
I trhink most of our defence strategy is a few guys with mullets, southern cross tatts and no teeth standing at the border asking "What are you looking at". It stopped people coming to my suburb for years.
Mr Lambright and I were debating just last night what sort of conflict we should be preparing for with the People's Republic, and whether we need subs to serve as missile launchers (nuke powered) or hunter killer/surveillance ships (diesel/electric are better) since none of our fearless leaders have managed to articulate exactly what outcomes we're planning for, and the prospect of spending $360b on subs to deter the launching of water filled missiles seems very much on brand with the approaching apocalypse.
The impression that I've got over the last ten years at least has been that our entire "defence" strategy has been to run the country into the ground so that no-one else would want it. Our existing submarines are said to be nearing end-of-life with no prospect of replacement, we have no ships to speak of (and the ones that we have keep breaking down) nor any capacity to build more or fix them. We replaced our long-range aircraft with short-range ones that don't work (and can't run the new software that might help a bit). We've recently bought a couple of cruise missiles and drones, and JORN appears to work well, so perhaps push-button is the way we go.
Having invested in and learned a f-ton on sub development with Collins 1.0 (which turned out to be an excellent sub after the initial teething problems were solved), we should have started Collins 2.0 development 20 years ago, and built on and expanded the knowledge we'd gained developing 1.0.
I know nothing about military hardware, and even I was astonished that we would toss away all that hard earned IP and buy something from another country and then get them to change the tried and tested design to suit our very specific requirements. And then do that THREE TIMES. Utter madness.
i didnt read the article (my time online is very limited atm (chores galore)) but are the peoples republic really just stock piling for a giant water bomb fight once temps get up above 2 degrees above average?

Lets talk to Gina about some sponsorship.

I need to sit down and have a real think about this Australia defense thing. Maybe turn it into a web post.
YES PLEASE! 😂
