Might be that my gloomy prediction of a war over Taiwan in January next year when the US is distracted by its Civil War sequel is a bit too gloomy.
China has invested untold billions in building up its missile forces—seriously, we keep asking ‘Whatcha doing with all the rockets, guys?’ and they’re like, ‘Not telling, eh,’—but it seems like some of those billions might have ended up in waterfront property in Sydney. A delicious irony, since the rockets in question, ended up full of water.
Chinese officials filled missiles with water instead of rocket fuel in one example of pervasive corruption, according to a report on U.S. intelligence assessments of China's military.
Sources familiar with these intelligence assessments, quoted by Bloomberg, said Chinese President Xi Jinping's recent extensive military purge was prompted by alarming levels of corruption within the nation's defense infrastructure.
Thanks to JasonL for the heads up.
I still think we’re doomed, but.
I agree with you JB, thinking that something like this means that China doesn't have the military capabilities to kick ass would be like thinking the U.S doesn't have the sort of weapons to support multiple wars in other countries just because it's military spends 100$ on items like hammers and toilet seats. At least you can be sure that no defence contractors would be corrupt when taking the Petagon's money and not delivering what they were contracted to supply.
I trhink most of our defence strategy is a few guys with mullets, southern cross tatts and no teeth standing at the border asking "What are you looking at". It stopped people coming to my suburb for years.
