The new Star Wars tactical fighter game looks pretty amazing. I could watch the gameplay video all day long.
Dave Milner (@DaveMilbo) has a nice write up over at the Smage (one of his first non Covid outings for a while) so I’ll leave the critical breakdown to him. Spoiler: he loved it.
It’s been a while since I’ve played anything (thanks, stupid multiple book deadlines) but this thing looks cinematically gorgeous, especially since nobody can actually go to the cinema anymore. One small detail spoke to me, the way starlight flared on the ‘weathered’ surface of an X-Wing. Beautiful.
To note, it’s VR compatible, which would be sick-makingly awesome, if my eyes weren’t getting fuzzier with every day.
But also noted, it seems you have to play through some sections as a Space Nazi which, lets face it, is what the Empire boils down to. I fucking hate Space Nazis. I’m writing a whole trilogy about how much. Deploy whiny tone: Why do I have to be one in this game?
Oh, well. I guess I better get back to writing about punching Space Nazis while I don’t play this game.
Oh yeah I've got this one; stuck on the final mission because I decided to be clever and upped the difficulty to "Just How Stubborn are You?"
This is definitely a must-have game if you've got a HOTAS and VR setup. If not, I'd argue it's worth investing in one. The story is garbage, it's basically a side story to the fun Alphabet Squadron books. The real joy is in getting to explore your cockpit, fly a bunch, and shoot some space nazis. Or rebel scum. Whatever shade of kink you're into, that day?
Worth a buy, JB. Controls are HARD, though, so practice in the campaign or the PvAI stuff for a bit.
I'm tempted - haven't enjoyed a spaceship games since Wing Commander/Privateer really. Got some mileage out of the old X-Wing/Tie Fighter games. Tried Elite Dangerous but didn't get into it. Maybe this time?
They have tried this with a few of the recent Star Wars games, weirdly some people want to play as TheEmpire/First Order I blame Admiral Thawn for making it cool to be in the empire. Also have you seen the cool anime style Tie Fighter short film - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PN_CP4SuoTU&t=29s complete with eighties guitar.
