Who’d a-thunk beer wasn’t entirely good for you? Or wine or whiskey? Or a big night on all three? I decided to have a break from the beers (and all the other adult beverages) a couple of weeks ago because I just couldn’t shake this chest infection I’d picked up.
Besides not being good for the immune system, drinking also interferes with my sleep, and getting more sleep is some of the best medicine I know.
So, three weeks dry, except for one G&T which I didn’t finish, and one Greek beer on Sunday, which I did. It was delicious. But I just had to punch a new hole in my belt, about an inch in from the last one, which I’d also added manually.
I can’t imagine its got anything to do with the 2000-3000 extra and empty calories I’ve been chugging down every week through Covid, until three weeks ago.
I shouldn't really do this but the way to get around hangovers and shitty sleep is day drinking : ) the trick is to not let it flow into night drinking. You have to stop and swap it out with water. In all seriousness - i had a good break for a few months and it did wonders. But there are a few markers it was hard to break the habit for: doing a hard days slog on the block on the weekend, standing around the firepit, going over to the neighbours house. Also not needing to get up in the middle of the night to take a leak is also a bonus.
Yeah, I bought myself a Soda Stream and I've been a lot of fizzy water. I mean... A LOT. My sleep is deeper, but I do wake up at least once more than I used to because I need to take a slash.
I had an extended beer season because all the sons-in law were around, which is unusual as they live overseas, but also here for many weeks post Christmas, so I had a fucking gout attack, well two actually, one after the other, and fucked my foot right up, so no more beer for me, just non-Russian vodka and wine (separately).
Don't remind me...I've been putting off easing up on the beers for a while. I do want to reduce my scooter tire on my waist, but the beers keep calling me back.
Mrs W had the gestational diabetes thing in 2020, so in solidarity I quit the carbs, processed meats and soft cheeses (and most of the booze) with her. Near the end of that I had two new work suits which were tailored to within an inch of my life. 12 months later I had to breathe in to fit them.
So again with the low/no carbs lifestyle at the beginning of this year. 3 months later and the suits fit again.
But yeah, what is it with getting older? A few beers and a coupla glasses of wine and I have the shittest night's sleep. It's almost enough to make me want to quit. If only it didn't feel so good.

In case you're not already aware of this: some people here in Germany call beer "liquid bread". Therefore, it doesn't count as alcoholic beverage.

Ugh, I'm terrified of gout. I should probably be more frightened of heart disease. But for some reason it's gout that gives me the willies.
Just don't go getting gout in the willies.
It’s fine as long as you like unbearable pain, no sympathy, and medication you take until you get diarrhoea.

It just all seems so very, very unfair doesn't it!
