I wanted to love Foundation on Apple TV. I would have settled for just liking it. But although I watched the first season in its entirety, it never really mapped onto my pleasure receptors. I couldn't hook onto a compelling thread to follow, and none of the characters really appealed. But I found myself with a bit of time to kill, and a couple of episodes from season 2 lined up over the weekend, so I thought I’d give it another go. Jane had borrowed my iPad 'cause she was still in bed with the flu, so I was forced to walk the extra couple of metres down into the TV room, like some sort of animal.
Maybe it was the bigger screen, but I found myself much more invested in Season 2. Some of the characters are the same, even though the story has jumped forward 150 years. Harry Seldon is still with us, of course. And there's the whole bizarre mother-daughter thing between Salvor Hardin and Gaal Dornick. But where I found some of these relationships and characters completely frustrating the first time around, it seems the writers have actually put some work into thinking through their storylines and revealing character through action this time. I enjoyed it.
And now I'm a bit pissed off that I have to wait for the next episode to drop.
Of course it could just be that I watched it on the big screen for a change. It was much more impressive than just sitting hunched over my 12-inch iPad. I've concluded that there are some types of TV that can be watched without any loss of impact on a smaller handheld screen. But there are some which really do benefit from the big screen. And Foundation is one of the latter. The scenes on the haunted ghost mining desert planet in Ep 3 particularly benefited from all of the extra screen space. It was way more overwhelming and involving.
Anyway, if you gave up at the end of the last season, like I did, give it another go. But watch it on a big screen. I imagine that on a pair of Tim’s $5000 spendy goggles, it will be amazing.
Can agree the bigger HD screen helps make it a more impressive experience. Which makes me wonder if the claustrophobic Silo series works better on the smaller screens.
I quite enjoyed S1, maybe because I hadn't read the source material and therefore went into it with no expectations. Looking forward to S2, but I'm waiting for most of the season to drop before I get started.
I'm currently obsessing over S2 of Good Omens, I binged it over the weekend and now I've started a re-watch to pick up all the stuff I missed on the first go round
It bothers me a little that every outdoor scene looks like it was filmed in a quarry, like 1970s Doctor Who or Blake's Seven. eg Terminus has supposedly been settled for a few centuries by season 2 - you'd think someone might have thought of attempting to plant at least a shrub or something, if not an actual tree, in all that time? What are they eating?
