I recall enjoying the first movie, especially the dive into the jujitsu culture of late Victorian London. It mashed up a bunch of stuff that was true with stuff that was silly but fun, and even more stuff that was off the leash bananas but which served the story.
Same deal here.
The writers avoided the sequel trap of just doing the same story but MOAR, effectively creating a satisfying mystery for the junior Holmes to solve, with a little help from her bigger brother Sherlock and a couple of other returning characters.
It was diverting, entertaining and not at all historically accurate. A bit like the original stories. No doubt some idiots will get themselves in a twist over the multicultural reimagining of London, but fuck that noise. London was the capital of a global empire at that time and with that status came accelerated cultural atomisation. Stuff like jujitsu schools taking seed and growing a following within the suffragette movement – a thing that actually happened.
Anyways, if you have a Netflix sub and a couple of hours it’s a decent investment of some sit-down time.
it makes it so much easier to sit down and watch stuff with the kids that you can enjoy as well. It's always very present in my mind that the time i get to do that is very short and getting shorter. It's a bit of a skill to amuse a wide audience especially delineated by age. Our problem these days is a growing list of "you better not watch that without me" and then not getting that time when all four of us can make it (usually i have to sacrifice sitting down and run it while i'm cooking dinner or something)
Someone at my morning gym sesh today was also talking this up. I shall have a look.
