Dave was always distressingly stupid but he was believably distressingly stupid. I mean, I wanted him to die (and I still do), but really he's just operating at the absolute upper limit of his (mental) capabilities.
I read one of them between, I think, 11 am and 6 pm one Sunday I had the house to myself. And it was signed. I showed up at Avid Reader for a signing and I'm pretty sure you'd just finished your last mouthful of breakfast when I shoved the book at you.
I really loved that series from a pure entertainment perspective. Still go back and read them all again from time to time. I always get frustrated at the end because it feels like there are at least another 3 books in it.
My old man loves Dave vs. Monsters. But, so did I. They were awesome. And if peeps quit reading your books because of your protagonist, they didn't give the narrative a fair chance. He was an unlikable guy, and he knew it. Also, as the series went on, his shortcomings and life choices came back to bite him again and again. It's a good thing to step outside of your comfort bubble and do something completely different; I try to do this as well. But then again, I am an obscure writer, perhaps deliberately. Never tried to shop my work, and I probably never will. So, don't listen too hard to this voice in the benighted wilderness. Just my two cents.
'Still, I’d love to get the IP back.'.....wait - you don't have the rights to The Dave? If by chance you were of a mind to write the last three books (or part thereof) you'd have to get permission or something? Pardon my ignorance on such matters...
I dont have to get permission no. But I can use the first three books to help sell any new ones, for instance by dropping the price to zero for a few days.
Now the big fruit company has gotten on board with Monarch, perhaps they'd be interested in an UnderRealms series...

He really was an everyman hero. We've all known a Dave

There were. Fortress, Citadel, and Empire.
What? How did I miss this??? Where do I find them?
Never written. Just planned.
Is there a future in which they get written?
! Where are the Finishers when we need them, those rascals.
Guess you better get onto that then. Probably now

Loved the Dave series. Hope you get to push it forward in some way.
