When I switched jobs and went from working from home a couple of days a week to working from home full time, I had a day of mild alarm the first Tuesday I was at home because my then 1 year old kitten vanished for the day, and didn't come home until 8pm. This was out of the ordinary for what I understood of her normal routine when I was home. I didn't realise until later that Tuesday was the day my squad was in the office in my previous office based job, which meant I was gone all day on Tuesdays, and the kitten had clearly decided that was her day to go do secret cat business all day. When I would get home from work at 6pm and she'd stroll in for dinner at 8pm it just seemed normal, but of course I didn't realise she'd bail for the WHOLE DAY after I'd left for work.

Interestingly when she realised I was at home full time she never disappeared all day ever again; she just supervises my work day from different places around the house and garden, and then wanders into my study to shout for food when she decides I've not been paying her sufficient attention (usually in the middle of a meeting).

If we got home at the normal time, the cat would be waiting, but if we got home early, she'd stagger out of the living room with a WTF look.

Pretty good for a 1 year old though.

She's an absolutely terrifyingly independently minded chaos demon. She's also very strict in what she considers to be the household routine, she regularly scolds and corrects me if I'm not doing things correctly.

When my BFF catsat for me when I was travelling for work she got schooled quite harshly for not feeding the chaos demon in the correct way - not in terms of the food served, but the way in which it was served, in that the BFF was spooning the food onto her dish on her placemat on the floor, rather than taking the dish away, deploying the food and returning it.

She's lucky she's cute, and also that her older brother is incredibly chill and low maintenance 😹

we had a family cat when i was growing up that did this - turns out she got locked in a garage next door accidentally and shot out when our neighbours got home from a weekend away. Now our family cats are strictly full time indoors (i have an indoor policy due to my interest in nature) and everyone freaks out when a cat slips out the door. We've had other parents comment about how amazing it was that our children always closed doors behind them. Of course that trick was the one we used to fill the one habit slot that kids have and they were hopeless on everything else. Good to see she is back safe and sound.

One of our two feline overlords has a knack for getting locked in our neighbours (plural) garages. She is a nosy little bugger, just lacking the commonsense to bail out when they close the door!

Dang, our cat Trevor (male, desexed, mommas boy) is still awol after 10 days. It’s killing me. Silly ideas about what was his fate enter your head and it’s a very tough mind game.

Oh no, it's awful. Here's hoping Trevor turns up safely 😿

Cats don’t really answer to anybody. They disappear for a night or a few days. Hooking up , murdering critters , partying up. Then come home like nothing happened . They’re like Tony Soprano.

One of my friends had a cat that went missing for four years. Turned out it turned up at a family about 500 metres away and just decided to live there.

This is how I acquired the chaos demon's older brother. As a 10 week old kitten he just walked into my house, looked around and seemed to declare "yes, this will do nicely, you may feed me now."

It's been 12 years and counting since that night 😂

Cats do curious things, and usually return with chunks missing from their ears.
