I kinda watched it? I went out and mowed and did stuff. Caught the women's fight and in my extremely non experienced opinion thought they made the wrong decision, but whatever, what the hell did i know. It was bloody brutal though. Far out. I suffered the "wth?" moments when my feed buffered like i was trying to download a picture on the internet in the 90s. I almost threw something at the tv every time a blatant cross promotion came up, like a shot of the guys from cobra kai, or the even more blatant seat warmers dressed up for squid game "season 2 coming in whenever".
Funny you mention the ear thing. I always mention the rape thing, then the ear thing, when trying to explain who he was to the z's.
I watched it, but fully get that it was a strange exhibition. I watched it because I wasn't doing anything else and it was easily available.
Having it on Netflix is the big difference. Those lads would otherwise have gone to a pub for the big screen, a few beers and hopefully a lotta bets amiright? The rest of us just wouldn't have bothered.
The impression I got from Twitter and Bluesky was that there was a subset of people who were greatly looking forward to Tyson beating the snot out of Paul, but were sadly disappointed on that front.
Re the Trump comment, Annabel Crab wrote a piece for ABC likening Trump more to WWE and their playbook. It reads like a reasonable argument to me. Hmmm, maybe this boxing match should be taken more like WWE than boxing…
One interesting quote from it:
“It's now eight years since The Atlantic's Salena Zito made probably the most pellucid observation of all about Trump — BEFORE he won, not after: "The press takes him literally, but not seriously; his supporters take him seriously, but not literally."”
shakes fist and yells "get off my lawn" lol

Yeah I reckon that's right. I'd love to see the business plan.

I was one of these people. I was disappointed.

I don't think I've ever watched a boxing match. I guess this would be epic for those that follow, and it wasn't, from all reports
I got pretty sick of it being the starting screen every time I started up Netflix to watch something I wanted (like s2 Arcane) this week.
Matt Ruby has an interesting take: https://substack.com/@mattruby/note/c-77758870
He was there and saw it as more of a red hat bro-fest than anything.
That does not surprise me.
