One of the most prestigious publishers of science fiction short stories has closed itself to submissions after a deluge of AI-generated pitches overwhelmed its editorial team.
Clarkesworld, which has published writers including Jeff VanderMeer, Yoon Ha Lee and Catherynne Valente, is one of the few paying publishers to accept open submissions for short stories from new writers.
But that promise brought it to the attention of influencers promoting “get rich quick” schemes using AI, according to founding editor Neil Clarke.
In a typical month, the magazine would normally receive 10 or so such submissions that were deemed to have plagiarised other authors, he wrote in a blogpost. But since the release of ChatGPT last year pushed AI language models into the mainstream, the rate of rejections has rocketed.
In January, Clarke said, the publisher rejected 100 submissions, banning their “authors” from submitting again. In February to date, he has banned more than 500.
Being a little facetious. But at the rate we are observing I’d say maybe 3 yrs . AI will be in every facet in 5 . Media , tech services, finance. ( bye to stockbrokers ) and of course defense. Like him or hate him Musk has been warning us for years already.
I've come to not like him very much at all because he's trashing my favourite platform, but yeah, he has been warning about this for years now. That's the whole premise of his neuralink investment. An arms race against AI.
Remember that old TV show V? Musk looks like one of them, it won't be long and he'll be tearing away his skin from his funny eyes to reveal his true lizard form underneath.
I must apologise. The above comment was an attempt at humour. I had no idea until yesterday that there is a not unsignificant percentage of the population that believes in a cabal of alien lizard people overlords in disguise amongst world leaders.
Bruce Sterling wrote some stories around a comparable premise - he had Mechs (cybernetically-enhanced humans) vs Shapers (genetically-enhanced humans). But he missed that the Mechs might not have to be humans at all. It was a while ago, AI still felt a bit like fantasy then, I suppose.
Yep. Not a surprise.
Sounds like a DDOS attack
Probably feels like one too.
I wonder if there is a place in the creative process for AI to build a first draft for a human author to take and build upon?
The first draft of a paragraph, for sure.
So what happens to the Nebulas ? The Hugo’s? Will there have to be a separate category for AI ? Hybrids ? How will we know the difference?
For now, the difference is immediately obvious. Be interesting ten years from now, though.

Mea culpa.
Sounds like a great premise for a novel JB. AI v hybrids . Will humans persevere ? Do we deserve to? Maybe that’s how we end .

Sounds interesting. Might dig it up.
