I spotted a South African food store just outside of Noosa when we were last up there, and was so intrigued I just had to check it out.
There was lots of Biltong, as you’d imagine, and a heap of weird biscuits and lollies I’d never heard of before. But the thing that caught my eye was this in the barbecue section.
It’s not surprising that South Africans like BBQ, I guess. But I didn’t expect them to have their own Cajun spice mix. I didn’t expect it to be so cheap - about a third of the price of local spice rubs and even less again than the US imports. And I really didnt expect it to be so good.
I rubbed it into some chicken thighs yesterday morning and let them marinate for a day in the fridge before cooking them over the coals last night. And holy shit. They were great.
But now I have to drive all the way back to Noosa.
On line. I looked. $6.99 for 100 GM.
If you know the name of the spice mix and store have you heard of this new think called online shopping, all the kids are doing it. Sometimes they even deliver using post.
