The Kindle I plugged into my US account died on me this week, and I’ve been resisting the urge to replace it. When Amazon opened their Australian business, they started aggressively pushing local accounts to use the dot au service, which sucked a bit at first because it was pretty spare. It’s better now, but still not as comprehensive as the US Kindle store.
I don’t know that I’ll bother with a separate slab for that older account, though, because my original login was a Bigpond email address which is now dead, effectively orphaning the account. It means losing a bunch of books in there, but it’s not like I paid top dollar for them, so I guess I’ll just suck it up.
I’ve gone back to reading a bit on Kindle recently, trying to do something better with my weeknights than streaming endless TV. I find I sleep better that way, although not so much this week because I’ve been reading Between Two Fires which is a pretty gnarly horror novel premised on the idea of the Black Death turning into some sort of demon plague. It’s good writing, but I can tell it’s going to be unrelentingly grim. Not the sort of thing I normally read, but Alan Baxter recommended it and I’ve become quite fond of the main characters. I do hope nothing untoward happens to them.
I did the move to Aus account too. I resisted for years because sometimes there were books that weren't available on the Aus Kindle store. But after a time I found all the books I wanted were in the Aus store too. Then just last month I found a book that wasn't on the Aus store :(
Thanks for the book recommendation! I'm currently hoping for a new Kindle Oasis.
Try a Kindle Paperwhite. It's very nice and basic with a long battery life.
