Having added an average of 30 minutes a night to my sleep swag with that eyemask, I’ve been looking for other ways to improve my snooze time. I long ago took Nora Ephron’s advice that the second glass of wine was why I couldn’t sleep through the night, and then I cut the first glass out, too.
One thing I haven’t been able to work out or workaround is training nights for jujitsu. I don’t normally get him until 9.30, and after having a shower and a small bowl of custard and protein pudding, it’s normally ten o’clock at the earliest before I get my head down. The alarm goes off at 4.45 the next morning. Not great, especially as it can take a while to come off the training high.
So last night I tried a melatonin tablet. They’re supposed to help you get to sleep quicker and stay that way. It seemed to work. But I had a migraine come on after breakfast this morning. Might just be coincidence. Might be because of the melatonin. Only one way to find out…
If you want to know about Melatonin, and how it shouldn't actually work in the way most people take it, I can't recommend Scott Alexander's post highly enough: https://slatestarcodex.com/2018/07/10/melatonin-much-more-than-you-wanted-to-know/
Wish I had some advice but my nights of sleeping through are long gone.
