It’s been nearly a month since I re-released Felafel in ebook, and about a week or two since I put the print version out there. The ebook is doing fine, but the print version is … weird.
Not JD Vance weird. Just uh… Not really behaving itself.
I listed it at $24.99, which is about as cheap as I can go with print-on-demand before I start losing money on each sale. (There are no economies of scale with PoD.) But for some reason, it’s listed on Amazon for over sixty bucks.
No idea why. Maybe Jeff needs another orbital waterbed or something.
It could be that the previous publication history is interfering with the release. I had all sorts of trouble convincing Amazon that I had the rights to my own book. The British publishers are still selling their version all over the Internet. Also, there is a bizarro second-hand market where you can pay up to a grand for a paperback.
It’s all pretty vexing and reminds me why I’m better off writing new stories rather than trying to faff around with the old ones.
Hey. FYI- I've run into a similar prob with my POD books in Oz. I think I read somewhere that PODs for Oz are made in Germany and then shipped there, which explains the high cost. Note: just verified with "Light's End." In the US, the dead tree version is 12.99 USD. In Australia? 50.15 AUD. This is a gross markup, and if the books have to be produced in Germany and then shipped half a world away as I suspect, it makes some sense. Otherwise, it's obnoxious price gouging of the first order.
That's very odd, because for me Light's End comes up at $21.63 AUD.
I bought the Ohio Rifles trilogy and Storyteller's Heaven POD for ~$75 AUD when they dropped; I mean I love your books but I think you'd upbraid me quite strongly if I paid $50+ for each of them 🤣
Of course they're all worth MUCH MUCH more now that you've scribbled on them all for me.
This is such a pity, because new readers will face increasingly difficult barriers in accessing your older works and enjoying all the world destroying splodey goodness.

It could be an IP address thing. I'm not sure. I should have checked in while I was in Oz.
If you have a VPN change your settings to pretend to be in Oz and see what comes up 😊
so what you are telling me is that i should get a mate stateside to buy two copies of your books and send me one in the mail
While I'll never turn down the offer of book sales, you might wanna check in Oz. My results could be colored by my IP address.

Woah, I have at least 2 old copies of Felafel. John, check under the house for old returns. We could make a killing at a grand a pop.
