Its an excellent strategy. I have found listening to podcasts downloaded on my phone with wireless buds also helped end my distracted doomscrolling when I left facebook and twitter. Toughest challenge was finding non-apple earpods that don't have a detachable cuffs that can end up inside your ear requiring a trip to a medical center to remove.

Welcome to the reformed scrollers club. I still take photos and post on IG (although it's just a platform for sexbots, normal bots and russian bots and the US politics still creeps in. Cant have one funny post without seeing Kamala or Trump mentioned by throw away accounts with 5 posts and no followers). I nuked my FB account ages ago in disgust, but like you i have family members on it and its easy to catch up that way so i started again. Just dont join the local FB group that loves a whinge about proper roundabout use or asking if anyone has any accommodation available. Or a complain about dogs barking.

For what it's worth, I used to look at Twitter religiously every morning over breakfast.

I intentionally signed out when I went on holidays recently and then just....never signed back in. I don't miss it. In fact I'd forgotten all about Twitter until reading this article. I might pop in during work time since the people I follow are mostly work related anyway.

Now TikTok on the other hand. Christ, I have uninstalled and reinstalled that thing a dozen times. I find I have to be incredibly strict and limit myself to 30min a day, usually straight after the kids go to sleep, otherwise it's an even bigger time suck than Twitter.

Ha, I’m very smugly pleased with myself never to have opened TikTok.

I made a very deliberate choice never to sign up for Tiktok for this very reason 😂

The best ones end up on FB or Twitter, and I have a millennial friend who screencaps and sends the best of the best to me (this is how I surfed the wave of "mindful and demure"; he had a bunch of Harris remixes of that to send me, and for me to get the meme he had to send the original video to me for context, and I felt like I'd been given the Rosetta stone to yoof humour. The number of Gen Xers I then paid that forward to...).

I recommend a lovely little book by of poetry by Tom Hirons called ‘Sometimes a Wild God”. The poem is also available on his website, but the small simple book fits comfortingly in your hand. It’s available from Feral Angels Press. Nick Cave came across it when checking out the title of his new album, “Wild Gods”, and is apparently also a fan.

I dumped everything except FB about 18 months ago for the same reasons. But now I bought a tourism business I have to do social media. However, I just stick to whale watching related posts and so far so good.
