I think you'll love it. I made the mistake of going "I'll have a look and see what it's like" and now I'm stuck on the agony of the weekly episode drop 😂
Having read the book and seen the original 1980s series, and now this one. Ok nobody beats Mifune (though Hiroyuki Sanada does a fine job) and the 80s Maurice Jarre soundtrack is also not beaten. But this version is more gritty and more explicit and detailed. Mariko san is a bad ass instead of a passive submissive doll. So as a series definitely one to watch.
2024 turns out to be a great series year: Masters, Shogun, The Regime (with Kate Winslet), The New Look (a great period piece on post WW2 France) and season 2 of Tokyo Vice. All we are missing is the Axis of Time season 1 (and the overpaid but way too late cameo of yours truly off course ;-) )
For me it's so rare that I actively avoid adaptations of books that I've loved. I'll make an exception for JB on the presumption that it'll put more money in his pocket and that the 'splosions will be FKN AWESOME!1!
I’m sure it’s a great coat. Further investigation indicates the Napoleon coat website is pretty shonky so sadly I would probably look elsewhere to buy my murderous 17th Century despot gear.
I understand that Perfidious Albion was always perfidious because their interest in the continent from 1700 or so was in maintaining the status quo, such that none of the European powers could threaten Britain.
The development of Germany as a power in its own right, as opposed to 400 or so bizarre little kingdoms, was a factor in upsetting the status quo, and then the long, slow, decline of the Holy Roman Empire (those jut-jawed Hapsburgs) was a mess too. So the Brits were continually playing the major players against each other, to ensure that none of them could threaten Britain's naval power and international empire.
Or we could just watch Game of Thrones for the fictionalised version with dragons.
My favorite part of the Napoleon movie, is when the little Corsican thug roars at the British, Ambassador, “You think you are so special, because you have BOATS!“
I have seen very mixed reviews about Napoleon, but I must put my history nerd hat on and give it a go. I've started Masters of the Air and am hooked.
Speaking of history nerd, is anyone watching Shogun on Disney?
Waiting until full season drops, but it is on my to watch list

a salutary lesson for all of us
Quite! Cats and curiosity etc 🤷♀️
RE Shogun: hai!
Woot! What are your thoughts? 🤩

I’ve been waiting eagerly for the Regime, and The New Look is on my watchlist 😍
Eh check out Dune. Fucking awesome
Yeah. How can you make a three hour movie that has you leaving the theatre thinking "that ended a bit abruptly: I want some more, please."
Translating a great book into a great movie is rare. Made me remember why going to the movies was fun .

Ya for sure. If the Cruel Stars isn’t streaming on Amazon or HBO or wherever soon I say we protest at the UN !
BTW IMAX is the only way to go on Dune
Or Apple Vision Motherfucking PRO!!!
But I can’t bring my wife . A truly reluctant sci fi fan who loved it . Not to mention the giant tub of movie popcorn that I paid a kings ransom for.
Here’s a chance to fight back against the mysterious gremlin that disappeared your beloved fleece-lined bomber jacket.
I see that you can purchase Joaquin Phoenix’s 2023 Napoleon long wool coat for $149.99 USD (reduced from $199.99!) right now on the internet!!
Oh. My. God. OMIGOD OMIGOD OMIGOD
I'd prefer my great coat

Damn
Oops, 19th century.
