… or, if I’m being honest, finally an opportunity to eat pastry. Most Tuesday mornings find me in the city because Jane has her PT session at West End super early. I have a walk around the river, and then we meet at Strauss for breakfast, where every Tuesday morning we have the Asian chicken omelette with sourdough and avocado.
On my way to Strauss, I have to walk past this intriguing Japanese bakery. It’s only recently sprung up. Normally, I’d have to deny myself the pleasures within. But not this morning. This morning was different because I had to renew a referral for my dermatologist, which meant hanging around in town long enough to see my GP. With an appointment scheduled for 10.10AM I found myself with an hour and 45 minutes to kill.
It was pretty easy to do, as Brisbane has some really quite beautiful walking paths by the river, so I walked over the Kangaroo Point Bridge along the river on the north side, then down through South Bank and back into the city via the old Captain Cook Bridge. It was very nice. And I got to my doctor’s rooms right on time for the appointment. I picked up my referral and then walked back to the car.
I can assure you that it was merely a coincidence that the car was parked in a spot that put the intriguing Japanese bakery midway between me and my transport home. But having just walked for an hour and three-quarters, it seemed to me that I had earned myself a small indulgence. This did I make my way into the Japanese bakery to place within my possession this bad boy right here.
That’s custard you can see along the seam. Protein-laden custard. So, really, it was something of a healthy snack.
I was in Japan this time last year and fell in love with taiyaki. Mostly fish shaped pastries filled with sensational custard (or red bean paste for people with no taste buds) avaialable almost everywhere. I ate at least two a day and came back lighter than when I left. The results speak for themselves.
If you ate it standing up it would be even healthier because then it has no calorific value.
