We have improved at creating wealth. We have got worse at distributing wealth. How we’ll use artificial intelligence will probably make it worse.

"Sydney’s always been the point where global capital enters and leaves Australia, so there's always been a shit-ton of money there." reminds me of the observations made in your book Leviathan and I wonder how much it has really changed beneath the surface.

I feel like it's a wicked policy problem, intersecting Health, mental health, criminal justice and social services. And then there's this homelessness issue, the one involving women and domestic violence, the one involving indigenous housing and then there's the youth leaving children's services.

Yes, governments can walk and chew gum at the same time, and none of these should be a problem in a modern first-world nation. But here we are.

It’s surprising how much has changed in 10 years.

It’s also surprising how much has changed since COVID.

I know the general layout of the CBD, but the alleys that have filled in, the turnover of shops, the introduction of international chains (of all retail stripes) that I don’t recognise leaves me feeling like it’s a different city when I go in.

That's US levels of entrenched homelessness. We really are failing as a society.

In Western Australia, I have seen the deliberate erosion of State Housing since the mid 1990's, coming from both sides of the house. Neither Liberals or the ALP are serious about truly fixing the issue. And it can be fixed and probably within about five years. How I hear people demand?

Go ask Finland. They've done it. They got sick of seeing people literally freeze to death on the streets due to homelessness.

You're absolutely right JB, in the Sydney is awash with cash and this solution will cost some money but it will make lives better.

It's always a matter of political will.

Sydney has been a building site for years, esp in the CBD and around Bondi! When I come into the office for work (2 days a week) I'm stills truck by the lack of people in some places, or how some businesses that relied on 5 days a week office workers have died as WFH takes the people away. And don't start me on some of the old buildings that got flattened in a flurry of redevelopment - thats especially true around Bondi...great old buildings being reno'd or outright removed despite being perfectly serviceable (just old!)....

We go back to our old haunt in Enmore every now and again. And sometimes into the emerald shitty. 15 years does a lot to changing things in that place. I even had to go to some superannuation thing in the quay last year and it was in my old building. It had changed so much i couldnt figure out how to get in!

Housing is a need. We get sick and can die without it, even in the mild climates of the southern Australian coastline.

Governments need to build housing. Not just social housing, but housing. All of it. The insanity of leaving something so vital to a profit driven sector of the economy is absolutely mind boggling.
