I started watching this AppleTV sci-fi alternate reality series while I was down in Tassie and quickly got hooked. The premise is very me. A dude with a slightly disappointing but basically decent life gets sucked into a mirror maze of alternate timelines — or kidnapped into it, to be honest — and has to make his way home. An increasingly difficult and dangerous ask.
I had to portion out the eps to a max of two in a sitting because I knew if I didn’t, I’d end up binge-watching the lot in one go.
The show was adapted from a Blake Crouch novel of the same name, and Crouch wrote the adaptation, so it’s presumably faithful. In fact, it’s so good, I suspect he used the opportunity to polish this little narrative diamond to a high sheen.
Bottom line, I loved it so much I’m gonna get the book just to enjoy it all over again. It was compulsive viewing, and as I got more deeply invested in the characters, it gave me all the feels. I don’t normally get the feels about TV shows, apart from ‘Fuck yeah, good splodey!” But in this case, I had a couple of nights of bad sleep because I couldn’t stop thinking about whatever I’d just watched.
There was one episode in particular that made me want to spin up a whole recap podcast just so I could talk about it with any other obsessives.
Anyway, long story short, I fucking loved it. Great writing, amaaaaazing acting, and some bonkers ideas.
I was watching a bit at a time because it had me so STRESSED in parts. Haven't read the book so am curious what parts he tinkered with in the end.
I love an exciting premise that the writer sticks to and explores possible ramifications and still provides an unexpected but completely reasonable twist/suprise to me. If you watch the series you will understand what I mean. Great show.
