The first couple of weeks of the dread Miss Rona's reign, I was crushing it. We'd usually walk the dog early in the morning — like really early. I'd do a massive work out under the house in the middle of the day, just to break things up. And then in the evening I'd do another walk, say twenty minutes or so after dinner, around the local streets, which are punishingly hilly.
According to my Apple Watch I was smashing out nearly 1500-2000 calories a day. Unsurprisingly, I started to lose weight, which was cool.
But I think it might also have had something to do with all my favourite cafes and restaurants being closed, because I, er, seem to have found that weight again since they reopened.
Turns out you just can't eat confit duck and creamy parmesan mash at Mosconi and get away with it.
My covid fitness journey has also been a rollercoaster. Running every day at the start, then injured skating, now cycling until my leg heals up and can run again.
Not sure which is worse; Supreme wearing middle aged guy skateboarding or MAMIL on a ridiculously accessorised bike?
Embrace both! So says the bloke who busted his arm aged 42 skating in a compromised bowl (local troglodytes had burnt a wheelie bin in it leaving a very greasy residue), and who also rides a bike in lycra (although I have embraced the indoor trainer since the virus arrived).
My mate Lloyd in California took up skating in his 70s. He only stopped after a busted shoulder at 82! Apart from pads, he had no lycra or branded sportswear (of which I have been guilty - it's just plain comfortable). Me, I'll stick to walks in the bush, chores around the farm and Pilates with the old chooks.
God, why do you always post pics of the most amazing looking food? My mouth waters looking at this. Here in the hinterlands you can find good hamburgers and BBQ, which have their place, but refined looking delicious stuff? Pittsburgh. Which operates under different Corona rules. The old state boundaries used to mean nothing. Now they are visible, seemingly for the first time.
Whatever I am doing different doing wfh is working.
While I can snack with no end with all the yummies in the house, I feel no need.
Maybe not so many large cappuccinos as there is no coffee shop in the house, or the katsu curry/hsp/vietnamese BBQ pork & noodles rotation.
But not only is my weight not rising, it is slowly going down. and i am not missing out either (much). When I do eat it is something generally nice.
Maybe if I added some (gentle) exercise more would happen, but the mind struggle is real. Rather than zombie on the bus home, I generally take 30 minutes after logging out from work face down to reorientate to home from work.
I managed to score myself an indoor bike trainer (Kickr Core) and have got onto the online app Zwift which turns training into a game. Been doing a bunch of races and am almost at summer training volumes which has kept my weight stable and cycling power actually increasing. That said my diet has been absolutely atrocious.
I'm all about zwift, too. Dropped a few kgs and waistline cms, increased power. I like it very much. Plus in the depths of CBR winter, I can still get an hour of cycling done. I'm very happy with it indeed.
Memes say Rona will turn you into a hunk, a drunk or a chunk and I have hit 2 of these beautifully. I now know my gins very well and can accessorise a G&T to perfection. Also found several new red wines at a budget price that allow for a nightly glass or 3. Food wise WFH has meant I have banned potato chips from the house as well as chocolate and those damn TimTams. Someone keeps sneaking them in and I keep finding them. Not a hunk in sight. :(
Damn Now I want confit duck and creamy parmesan mash. For breakfast.

I do love me a good burger. But yeah. Fancy food is nice too.

I know it's selfish but three more weeks in lockdown (Melbourne style) and I should be at my goal weight.
