I was supposed to be in Canberra for a gig in early August, but the organisers called me yesterday to say that everyone had Covid so they’d like to push it back until next year.
Fair enough. I’d agreed to travel down there before the current wave and wasn’t feeling good about it anymore.
Lesson learned though. Only book refundable flights. (Luckily I did).
Postponing until next year might enable the airlines to get their baggage handling under control again and you can risk travelling with checked baggage if needed.
I dunno about elsewhere, but here in Canberra the general public seem to be unaware or unconcerned or both that we are having infection rates that are not dissimilar to lockdown times. I we are a mask any time I go out but hardly anyone else is.
But, having just been down to the Bay for a few days, much of a muchness there.
The real problem here, and probs everywhere, is that hospital staff are getting sick at high rates and so there are serious bed shortages - not because there physically aren't the beds, but there aren't the staff to operate them.
So your lack of comfort with coming was probably wise.

I think most people are just in deep denial. They want it to be over, but its not even close.
