This is pretty much my theory of the cultural rot that has enabled the likes of Trump and a general lack of seriousness in developed countries (especially the USA). A substantial proportion of the adult population behave in a child-like way. They don’t have any sense of deeper meaning in their lives. It’s all play. Aimless, selfish play.

Fully functioning adults live for other people. They understand real connection. They seek to contribute to their families, workplaces and communities. And they understand that this is the way to a more satisfying life.

I think there is a way to revive this, especially in Australia. But it has to include a recognition that an awful lot of people should grow up.

I found your piece emotionally effecting, felt myself tearing up with what you wrote. That episode I can still remember at the eulogy Hawkeye "We can all be comforted by the thought that he's not really gone, that there's a little Tuttle left in all of us. In fact, you might say that all of us together made up Tuttle." (Radar's eyes rolling in the background)
