Sometimes, even writers get tired of waiting for their books to come out. I know I’m not alone in hanging out for the final volume of The Cruel Stars trilogy. (My stalker here, assures me she’s also super keen to find out what happens with that whole space Nazi invasion thing.)
But, alas, publishers don’t set their schedules to suit the likes of us. So, while we’re waiting… waiting… waiting on The Forever Dead to come back from the editing factory, I decided to revisit an old collab with my writing bud, Jason.
The Javan War started as a side project—a bunch of standalone novellas telling the backstories of each main character in The Cruel Stars; Lucinda, Seph, Alessia, Booker and Mac. (The Stu, Larry, Ralph, Glenn and Kojack of interplanetary apocalypses). It got knocked sideways off my to-do list by COVID and Zero Day Code, but when Jason came a-visitin' Downunder earlier this year, we decided to polish off the notes for Lucinda’s origin story.
And here it is.
This isn’t the end of the series. The Javan War takes place before The Cruel Stars, and I hope it gives you a little treat to tide you over until the third and final book comes out.
We decided to release it everywhere all at once rather than exclusively on Amazon, so the best way to find it is via the universal link from Books2Read below. No matter where you might be in this crazy mixed-up world of ours, it should have an option for you.
(But not in print—that’d be ridiculously spendy for a simple novella.)
I hope you enjoy it.

Enjoyed it a lot. This line-“You couldn’t break Lucinda Hardy. She was already broken.”- reminds me of this line from a Brit movie in the 1970’s, can’t recall it now- “Broken people are dangerous. They know they can survive.”
Congratulations JB and Jason, this was a cracker of a read, I really loved it. The non linear structure was really innovative and almost cinematic in the way it plays out 😍
