I was listening to The Rest Is History the other day while puttering about with some chores, and I strayed far enough from my phone that I wasn’t able to hit the fast-forward button when the ads came on.
Best live adaptation, IMHO, of 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' was done by the BBC in the early 1980's with Tom Baker (Dr Who) playing Holmes. He brought the whimsical energy as well as deadly seriousness to the role.
From the same stable, I’d like to put a word in on behalf of The Rest Is Entertainment, which “pulls back the curtain on television, film, journalism and more with Richard Osman and Marina Hyde using their years of knowledge, enviable contact book & wit to bring you what’s hot & what’s not in the world of entertainment” (YouTube blurb, not my words), which I have found both entertaining & informative.
The closest I come to podcasts are youtube videos from the likes of The Grainbound, a dutch guy that talks about world building rooted in real world economics and technologies.
I like them because they have pictures and I am dumb.
I really should listen to podcasts, or watch more documentaries, but the world is awful enough and I am not sure it would be good for my brain you know?
Depends on the podcast I guess. There are some amazing pods out there that are a balm to the soul in this most awful of timelines, including amazing fiction ones.
I find it difficult to pay attention to audio books and I am just assuming that will translate to audio plays. I can read books for fucking hours though. Stupid brain.
I have to be doing something to listen to podcasts or audio books; so I listen a lot while driving, or doing housework etc. I can't just sit and listen or else I fidget to death and get distracted.
Fiction podcasts, depending on the production quality, can be a bit different than audio books because they often have a cast of voices, and sound effects etc, that not all audio books have. It might be worth giving it a go on your next road trip and see how you go.

As I was reading JB's post I was mentally grumbling about adding yet another pod to the eleventy billion pods I'm currently subscribed to. Glad I'm not alone in this. Although the entire Goalhanger stable is worth listening to, they really seem to hit the zeitgeist before the zeitgeist even knows it's the zeigeist.
Thanks to the little discussion about podcasts here i thought i'd try out The Rest is History. Started at ep1 which is set waaaay back in 2020. And its good. It has its hooks in, i only have another 640 odd eps to catch up (lol). But what i found really interesting was the caught in time commentary about Trump/Biden election race, covid, how Trump would spend his days grievance tweeting into the void until his death (which isn't far wrong, but he's doing it from the oval office). It's like a little time capsule in itself. I also heard the ad about the book club and was interested about the GOT ep. Seeing i have read the books but never really watched the tv series (got to sort of halfway through series 2 and then circumstances conspired against me). But i didn't write it down anywhere and it disappeared into the ether until i see this post this morning. Have now put it down in my notes folder on my phone under the podcasts title.

Their episode on Donna Tartt’s 1992 debut novel ‘The Secret History’ is very good.
This podcast only started a few months ago. I thought it was extraordinary that their podcast name ‘The Book Club’ hadn’t been snapped up previously.
