The 13th Century called and would like to know why nobody is freaking out enough about North Korean troops fighting in Europe.
That was the last time an army from Asia set foot in Europe. Pretty much the only time, actually, unless you want to count the Moors in Spain, and that’s not really the same thing.
Plenty of examples of conquering and colonising going back in the other direction, of course. So turn around could arguably be fair play.
But I can’t help feeling that this thing will get out of hand, and we’ll all be sitting around in the ruins scratching our arses and going, “Huh, didn’t see that one coming.”
Why not? It’s a world-historical WTF moment. And a fitting coincidence that Russia, the first European power defeated in an armed conflict with an Asian state (Japan in 1904-05) should be the gigantic loser with its paw prints all this one, too.
When the Mongol Empire swept across Asia and Europe it, for a certain point of view, could be considered a positive outcome (certainly some environmental metrics improved). An argument can be made that the empire forged by Genghis Khan could be considered to have made the modern world. I can make this claim because I read a book by Jack Weatherford titled 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World'.
i must be reading the wrong spots on the internet - this is the first time i've seen it mentioned and i've been busting to see the hot takes ever since it was first hinted at. Severely disappointed up to this point. I guess the circus over in the US is pushing everything off the front page so far.
