I do love me a good sandwich. The best ones stay with you in your memory for years afterwards. I had an amazing corned beef sanger in New York about 20 years ago that I still think about. I am forever searching for a decent Cubana sandwich in Brisbane, a Mexican toasty with pulled pork, ham, chorizo and sometimes even hotdog. Oh, and cheese, of course. You can't have a good sandwich let alone a toasty without cheese.

I got this bad boy a couple of years ago in Florence. It's their version of a ham, cheese and tomato sanger, and as you can see it's a whole meal.

Because I am a fool for a good sandwich, I very much enjoyed this piece by Robert Sietsema, who searched New York for the forgotten sandwiches of yesteryear.

As overblown and often invented sandwiches have become more common, topping out at $20 or more, it is inevitable that our minds are cast back to the smaller and cheaper sandwiches of the past. Especially those with fillings that — though still delicious — have completely gone out of fashion. Once available everywhere, I now have to search hard for what I’ll call yesterday’s sandwiches.

He started off quite reasonably with the meatloaf sandwich, although I've never heard of it coming with mashed potatoes inside the bread. Along the way he found some mystery meats I had never heard of, and some lunchbox favourites like boiled ham and Swiss.

That last one reminded me of how much I enjoy a simple salami and sliced cheese on white bread sandwich. So much so that I might lay in the goods to make up a couple of batches for the rest of the week.
