It’s definitely going to get worse. Just when you think we’ve hit bottom, that thing finds a way to go further. I’m somewhat surprised that this stuff hasn’t occurred earlier. It has though with the guy on NYE or whenever that no one mentions because he’s black.
Some say he’s only got 6 months before the dementia gets him. I can’t wait.
Also assuming they don't Weekend at Bernies him until the internal war of succession is resolved and a new Dear Leader emerges who will likely be worse.
I spend hours a day on Yankee podcasts - it does feel like we are doomed - but I want to talk to you about something related to your SF books! You are 14 years younger than me but I read HDWaFiHH and T Babes when they came out (very funny, very clever stuff!) - there were LOTS of parallels with our UNSW student house in Surry Hills in the 70s!.
Currently I am up to Ch18 of WW2.1 (the propaganda was correct - it IS very much a page-turner) and it occurs to me that you might be interested in the story of my Grand Uncle "Snowy Rhoades" - he was a Light Horseman in WWI and a Coast Watcher in WWII !
I once tried to get Bryan Brown interested in the idea of doing a docu-movie about Snowy and "Dixie" Lee (who was a great character himself) - who actually knew Snowy (I never did) - I did some interviews with Dixie some years ago (he was still a lively 93yo then with an amazing memory):
I can send you a copy of Snowy's journal "Diary of a Coast Watcher in the Solomons" (the diary is Reproduced with the Permission of the Admiral Nimitz Foundation) if you like? - or I could just get around to finishing scanning the pages for the site above . .

I moved from Sydney to Cowra (Central West NSW) in 2015 but if you were going to be in Sydney for a while I would happily get the bus and train to catch up with you if you were interested. I usually stay with an old school friend and his wife in Concord West when I am back in town.
It is all very scary. I would add that it is tempting to see all this as a "far away" problem that causes angst but has little relevance to us in Australia. If the shit hits the fan over Greenland, then I fear that we will be affected, even if only because of Pine Gap, the US Marine rotation force in Darwin, etc. On the plus side, AUKUS would then be well and truly dead.
America got it all wrong. They started shooting white people and white mid west women to boot. Its like they walked on to the set of their favourite sitcom and shot the lead blonde actress who came from a small town in Nebraska to make it big in Hollywood. Unfortunately that woman got shot in a time where the idiotic cranky Uncle demographic is desperately trying to prove they are right by doing absolutely nothing except whinge and complain about how white they are and how hard done by they are . And everyone is just waiting for them to leave the Christmas party because we are all too polite to say stfu.

Crazy thought - given the way things are going, is it worth doing a West-wing style alternate history where the results of the last presidential election are reversed.
The alternate president would actually go about resolving problems. Could do a chapter a week based on current events.
Might be a useful way to channel the frustration and anger seeping through the news feeds.
Risk is that things move so fast you struggle to keep up.
Yes, it would be wishful thinking and possibly delusional, but it would be better than dealing with reality that we can’t influence.
Just had the funeral for my father-in-law today and yeah... what with everything else going on its been a shit show since Christmas. But I’m not going to roll over and give up. Fuck that. Got stories to tell. Going to put a podcast together after meeting an old family friend who worked in the entertainment industry in Perth for decades both in front and behind the camera. He's got stories to share so it should be fun.
I wish you well. My own social profile is limited to Facebook for social contact with friends and family. I left X soon after Musk took over and have never stepped into any of the other social media apps. Though my eyes still glaze over as I doom scroll, god help me, through YouTube and Facebook shorts.
