Early start.

Tuesday mornings, you'll normally find me walking around West End before the sun comes up. Jane has a PT session pretty early, and I take the opportunity to get a walk down by the river. Her trainer called as we were on the way to her gym yesterday morning, however, and asked if she could reschedule. No biggie. Jane diverted to the gym in her club in the city, and I took the opportunity for a slightly different walk.

I thought I might have a poke around the CBD to see if there was anybody selling caffeine at 4:45 in the morning. But I’d parked the car down near the Botanical Gardens and the new bridge across to Kangaroo Point beckoned. There is a French pastry shop over there under the Storey Bridge.

I am not unfamiliar with it, and it occurred to me that pastry chefs are well known for getting up early. Perhaps if I walked across the bridge, there might be a pastry waiting for me.

Gentle reader, there was.

I picked this custard delight because it looked like the lightest thing on offer in the patisserie. But I can assure you it was so full of custard and sugar and buttery goodness that it weighed about half as much as a house brick.

It's a day later, and I'm still feeling a bit dizzy from it. However, it was a pleasant change to walk through a different part of the city at an unusual time of day. I took some quite nice photos, including this sci-fi-looking motherfucker.

One thing I wasn't quite ready for was just how effective modern phone cameras are at low-light photography. All of the images above were much darker in reality than they appear in my photo library. I'm sure there must be some setting I can adjust to capture something closer to the natural look, but I haven't figured it out yet.
